AI doesn't calculate your birth chart at Parashara AI — it never touches astronomy. Here's exactly where the line is drawn between deterministic computation and AI interpretation, and why that separation matters.

The question I get asked most

When people hear "AI-powered astrology app," the assumption is almost always the same: an AI looked at my birth details and decided what my chart says. That's not what happens here, and I think the distinction matters enough to explain properly — because if an AI were actually inventing your planetary positions, you'd be right not to trust a word of it.

Two separate jobs, deliberately kept apart

Building Parashara AI meant drawing a hard line between two very different kinds of work, and never letting them blur:

Job one: figuring out where the planets actually were. This is pure astronomy — no interpretation, no judgment calls, no AI. Your birth chart's planetary longitudes, house cusps, nakshatra placements, and dasha dates are computed deterministically from your birth date, time, and location, using astronomy-engine, an open astronomy library built on VSOP87 and ELP2000-82 planetary/lunar theory. I validated this engine against Swiss Ephemeris — the reference implementation most professional Vedic software relies on — across 13 test charts spanning different hemispheres, latitudes, and decades. Job two: explaining what those positions mean. This is where the AI comes in — and only here. Once the astronomy is settled, the AI is handed your verified placements as fixed facts and asked to interpret them using classical Parashari principles. It's explicitly instructed, in the system prompt itself, never to recalculate, re-derive, or guess a planetary position — only to reason from the numbers it's given.

Why the order matters

If you flip that order — let an AI estimate planetary positions from general astronomical knowledge instead of computing them — you get exactly the kind of confident-sounding but unreliable output that gives "AI astrology" a bad name. Large language models are not ephemeris calculators; they can produce a plausible-looking planetary position that's simply wrong, with no way for you to tell. Keeping the astronomy deterministic and outside the AI's control isn't a nice-to-have here — it's the only way the interpretation layer is worth trusting at all.

What this looks like in practice

If you ever see the app state a placement, a planetary aspect, or a dasha start date, it's reading that number directly from the computed chart — not recalling it from the AI's training data. Aspects (graha drishti) and combustion are also computed deterministically, following classical BPHS rules (Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th, and 10th houses from itself; Mars aspects the 4th, 7th, and 8th), before the AI ever sees them.
